Services and Fees

Mediation will be free if you qualify for Legal Aid. If not, you will only pay for face to face time at the time you receive the service, and for final documents. There are no other additional charges for telephone calls, letters, etc. You can control the timing of the sessions to fit with your ability to pay. I donate £3 from every referral to the homelessness charity, Shelter.

Step 1 - Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM)

Required in most cases before you can make a court application. All prices are inclusive of VAT.

  • Conducted by a skilled and experienced FMCA accredited mediator
  • 45 to 60 minute meeting (70 to 90 minutes for joint meetings)
  • 30 minutes preparation and follow up work
  • Expert support to explore the issues, the mediation process, and the alternative options available. Assessment of the suitability of mediation and whether you are willing to proceed
  • Legal Aid assessment if required
  • Letters and telephone calls to the other party
  • Court forms provided on request and for up to 4 months after the meeting
  • Joint meetings include some 1:1 time for each party to screen for willingness and suitability and to enable you raise any issues you wish to discuss confidentially

Step 2 - Mediation Sessions

Child Arrangements mediation usually takes 1 to 3 sessions, each about 60 to 90 minutes in duration.

Property & Finance and All Issues (Children, Property & Finance) mediation usually takes 3 to 5 sessions, each about 90 to 120 minutes in duration.

  • Conducted by a skilled and experienced FMCA accredited mediator
  • A brief 1:1 discussion with each party directly prior to each session, to check your support needs
  • 1 to 2 hours in the mediation meeting. A structured and focused process to establish the agenda, relevant facts, options and an outcome that is fair and meets the needs of all parties, including your children
  • Breaks and 1:1 support within the meeting, as required
  • Direct Consultation with children within the mediation process is available
  •  For Property & Finance mediation, provision of documents and systems to enable you to meet the standards of factual financial disclosure that are required to make your final decisions legally binding
  • A written summary record and/or action plan following each session
  • 30 to 60 minutes preparation and follow up time for each meeting

  • For Child Arrangements you will receive a written Parenting Plan to formally document your decisions; this can be made legally binding with the consent of both parties, if desired
  • For Property & Finance mediation and All issues Mediation (Children, Property & Finance), you will receive 2 documents:
    • The Open Financial Statement is a record of relevant financial facts and the evidence exchanged between you; it evidences that the financial disclosures you have made meet the requirements for a legally binding arrangement
    • The Memorandum of Understanding is a record of your final decisions and the rationale for these decisions. This document is used to obtain a legal order by consent
